Casanova and other things

It came to my attention today that not everyone knows who or what is a 'Casanova' - intriguing... I'll just take this little opportunity to update everyone. While I was telling a story over dinner about my 'Neighbor Casanova' -- one listener (Charlie) wondered if I might be referring to a person or thing, male or female, 'casa' for house or 'nova' for nuclear explosion? Or is this just long for "Cassie"? For those who don't know, a "Casanova" is someone who "is universally known for his ability to seduce and conquer many a woman's heart."  Also based on the real life of Giacomo Casanova.

Another listener wanted to know more - what other names might there be that one might no know? Ummm "Don Juan" maybe? Bingo!  No it is not  Don Quixote de la Mancha - that is different but a superb novel by Cervantes that everyone must read. No Don Juan is similar to Casanova in that the name is synonymous with 'seducer.'

Looks like my job is done here!

Pure Genius - Ray Charles

Ray Charles is a genius. The movie 'Ray' is really great too.  Jamie Foxx deserved the Oscar for it - he WAS Ray Charles. IFilm.com has a great little button "Add to MSN Spaces" which creates a blog entry with a link to the video clip included -- just as I've done here.   The clip below is Ray Charles and the Raelettes (the real deal people - not the movie) in a performance of 'What'd I Say" which was composed in front of a live audience because they had 20 minutes remaining in their set (but ran out of songs). Just say "what'd I say"...

Ray Charles O Genio: What's I Say?
Live in Sao Paulo, the night before his 33rd birthday way back in 1963, Ray rocks and rolls in his inimitable style. The Raelettes are wailing and the big band bides its time with tambourines as they wait for their big entrance, but it's all about the legend at the piano.

Triple Door

I went to the Triple Door on Sunday evening with a few friends from my Turkish class to see the Baladi Brothers. I almost didn’t go because I wasn’t impressed with the music samples on their web site – they sounded very staid and traditional. As luck would have it, Ulli called me on my way back from Hood Canal to encourage me to join them.  And I’m glad, because the music was much better live. I like the new friends I’ve made in my Turkish class, and this was a great opportunity to see them. The evening was made even better by the fact that they had a few belly dancers to entertain us – which I always enjoy.  Barry Bey and I were falling over ourselves for any chance to tip the dancers. You can see one of them show off her earnings in the photos – she’s very proud.

Brazilian Summer

The Brazilians are in town!! I had a nice surprise this week – both Paula and her brother Junior will be here this summer for a visit.  Junior is here now, and Paula will be here in a few weeks. Thursday we had dinner at Fasica – a great little Ethiopian restaurant in Columbia City (which I love).

This weekend, I took the ferry over to Hood Canal to meet up with Junior, his family and friends.  I stayed at the rustic yet prestigious Landhaus Liesche (my friend Jochen’s country estate).  Jason, Jochen, and I visited Junior & co. at the campgrounds for a superb dinner.  Bruce and Cindy made their infamous Paella; Junior made awesome caipirinhas; and I served some lovely home-made cranberry jam with feta cheese on bread. It was almost like New Years Eve 2005 in Brazil!! (well not quite – but kinda  )

At midnight we retired to the Landhaus Liesche for a well-deserved nightcap, some piano music, and listening to the silence. It was so awesome!!

Little bit o' Anger Management

Got a little Anger Management last Sunday at the White River Amphitheater.  I took my nephew and his friend, and my niece. Taking kids to a rap concert is pretty much the safest thing you can do these days. With all the security and the lack-luster attempt at crowd participation (just a bunch of gangsta wanna-be’s that don’t do anything more than dress-up and go to Anger Management concerts) – nothing good or bad can happen.  .

As far as the performers, I have only one word for 50 Cent: Stale. Very Stale.  Eminem still has enough star power and music to hold together the main act. It helps that he had D12 join him for much of his show. Bizarre was of course a big hit.

Eminem did have a questionable skit attempting to shock the crowd and anger parents.  The skit played between acts and showed him progressively contemplating suicide – I guess he’s bored with his life – or maybe more accurately he was disappointed in the crowd. Finally, he took a gun to his head and a ‘bang’ flag popped out. Totally didn’t see that coming.
